      Getting to know me better

Having attended several seminars, workshops, and job interviews over the years, I have found that it is often difficult to truly understand the background of a person during such short interactions. Hence, I have compiled a list of commonly asked questions, facts and trivia about myself to help you understand me a little better.

      Interview

      01. Please tell me about yourself

Hello, my name is Philson. I like to think of myself as an experienced IT professional with a passion for decentralization. With a Master of Science (MSc) in Information Systems from NTU, I possess knowledge and understanding of IT projects both from a technical as well a strategic and management perspective. Throughout my career, I have had the opportunity of working with project teams and managing the implementation and delivery of apps and services across different industries. These days, I spend my free time staying updated with the latest IT news and trading cryptocurrencies. For hobbies, I enjoy photography and going for regular workouts at the gym. Currently, I am searching for opportunities to work on the next great project, broaden my horizons and to contribute my expertise as part of a multitalented team.

      02. What's your greatest strength/weakness

I would say that being a perfectionist is both my greatest strength and my greatest weakness. When it comes to working on projects, no matter how big or small, I always insist on putting user experience at the forefront and bringing a high level of fit and finish to the final product. While it often takes me a little more time to carefully plan out and craft my work, the results as seen from the examples on this website, is an overall higher standard of quality. I look forward to working with experienced development teams to contribute my perspectives and learn how they strategize to deliver high quality products and services in a timely manner.

      03. What's your greatest achievement

In the past, perhaps I would have highlighted all of my academic achievements. Nowadays, I realize that there is so much more to life that just paper qualifications. Seeing my uncle succumb to multiple illnesses, and my own mother afflicted with stroke, spurred me to take a more active approach to managing my health and improving my fitness. I started scheduling regular gym sessions, putting together research based workouts, and sticking to strict meal timings. I am proud to say that I have since cut more than 25 kgs by myself, without the help of any personal trainers. Pushing through week after week of intense training sessions requires a significant amount of determination and mental fortitude, but I do believe that the process has made me a stronger person and that these qualities will carry on over into any prospective work that I engage in.

      04. Describe a work challenge you overcame

My role at DSTA required me to liaise with the military, my department superiors, and IT vendors, and their priorities were all not aligned. The military sought after the latest features, while my bosses focused on budget and timeline constraints, and vendors grappled with techinical issues. In order to address this challenge, I organized numerous meetings with key military officers to really understand their training needs, offered solutions, and proposed prioritizing critical functions while deferring additional enhancements to future updates. This allowed for military training to proceed undisrupted, for vendors to catch up, and for the project to be delivered smoothly.

      05. Why did you leave your previous job

As someone who is always looking to learn and grow, I am constantly searching for avenues for personal development. During my time with the company, I was able to find many ways to contribute and learn from the team. With the successful delivery of our latest project, it felt like the right time for me to take stock of current progress and seek new paths for growth. As I was looking to broaden my horizons, I charted plans to further my growth and seek out new challenges.

      06. Where do you see yourself in 5 years

I envision myself working towards taking on more senior management roles over the next 5 years. In order to be a good manager I will need to not only possess strong technical knowledge, but also be able to coordinate cross-functional teams and make decisions in light of broader business objectives. To achieve this goal, I intend to start out by building a solid foundation working with a company of talented and experienced engineers, progressing my way up while deepening my understanding of the company's business operations. Career goals aside, I am also looking to challenge myself to grow out of my comfort zone and adapt to new experiences.

      07. Why should we hire you

What sets me apart from others is my broad-based skill set. Unlike some engineers who only focus on technical skills, I am also able to appreciate the implications of business planning decisions. As evident by the works in my online portfolio, I am able to critcally analyze the business domain to craft IT solutions to meet your needs. Additionally, I have a good eye for design and always strive to bring a high standard of quality to whatever project I work on. Most importantly, I am constantly eager to learn and adapt. If you are looking for someone with a broad-based skill set to work on innovative products and services, then I will likely be the right fit.

      Other Trivia
    3. trivia

      Trivia

      01. I've been coding since 12 years old

May not sound like much today, but back in 2001 when we were still on dial-up internet, I was already borrowing HTML bibles from the library and using 'view source' on websites. I guess that probably set the early foundations for the path I'm on today.

      02. I run my own crypto trading bots

Fuelled by my interests in fintech and cryptocurrencies, I've deployed several experimental bots using Node.js on AWS to do 24/7 trading. While the trading algorithms are being refined constantly, they give me opportunities to study machine learning and technical analysis.

      03. I learned how to solve a Rubik's Cube

One day, when I was bored of the long waiting times we had during national service training with the army, I decided to borrow a friend's Rubik's Cube. Totally stumped, I referred to YouTube tutorials, which didn't help much. Eventually, I figured it out intuitively and can now solve it under 2 minutes.

      04. I have a junior black belt in Karate

When I was a kid, I trained under the Shitoryu Karate Association for about a decade from the age of 7 to 16 years old. While it was originally the cool TV shows that made want to join, I benefited not only from the self-defence techniques and physical training, but also the discipline that it instilled in me growing up.

      05. I like English, Chinese & Japanese music

Music is a key part of life whether you are happy, sad, relaxed or stressed out with work. My favorite bands for English music are Linkin Park, All Time Low, and Simple Plan. For Chinese music, I like F.I.R., Wang Leehom, and JJ Lin. These days I listen to Japanese music by YOASOBI, Atarayo, and Yuuri.
